In the tracks of Marco Polo

Uzbekistan is famous for its situation along The Great Silk Road and slowly but surely the country is gaining a reputation as a tourism destination not only for culture tours but equally for those interested in archaeology, eco tourism, ornithology, mountain trekking, camel safaris, to name but a few. To travel to and within Uzbekistan, foreign visitors usually rely on a combination of air and bus travel. However, a new mode of transportation is taking hold of the way Uzbekistan can be explored. On the classic travel path more and more frequently vehicles are observed that are not made in the CIS, have no familar tone to their brand name since they belong to the group of vehicles that is generally referred to as mobile home. The Germans, who are especially fond of this mode of exploring the world, call their home from home the Reise- or Wohnmobil. Spacious passenger cars equipped with everything one could require and wish for on a long journey on wheels, for an extended period on the road have long ago become a habitual site in many countries around the globe, against a backdrop of automobile diversity. Owners of such vehicles travel with their families or their friends, sometimes with their pets, and they are ardent devotees to adventure tourism. They set out from Germany, Italy, Austria, Holland or France on a journey that spans many countries, cultures and thousands of km's.
For a number of years now, spirited mobile home explorers from afore mentioned countries have joined in on a travel program called "In the Tracks of Marco Polo"; the route starts from Venice and ends in Frankfurt an der Oder, via 13 countries between them, such as Greece, Turkey, as well as Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan and China. They get a total of 30 000 km under their wheels and according to one participant, equally as many unforgettable impressions. Not surprisingly, since inspite of their increasing numbers, mobile home travelers are still considered a sensation wherever they appear on their exotic route, and wherever they chose to call a stop, are immediately surrounded by the curious and hospitable people of the East, eager to make an acquaintance. A journey by mobile home is the ideal way to get a glance into customs and traditions of the friendly locals you meet at every stop over.

Even though in Uzbekistan still no designated camper areas are available, mobile home owners should by no means be deterred from traveling here. We from Olympic Tours do take care of all aspect of "Reisemobil" travel and arrange safe and sound areas such as a hotel's parking space, sports stadium or as recently in Bukhara, a wedding palace. What a success that was and how pleasant for us to hear from our customers "What a wonderful place you have chosen for the parking!"
To further develop mobile home travel, we from Olympic Tours are making a pledge to participate in the creation of at least 2 rest stops for those traveling by "Reisemobil" to extend a genuine "welcome to Uzbekistan again in the very near future and to allow you to fully enjoy the benefits of this unique mode of getting to know the many facettes of The Great Silk Road up close and personal.
