MUSIC
The Tadjiks are mountain people and farmers in areas, that yield enough to live on only through much hardship. Nature determines the passage of time and daily activities, including farmwork and handicrafts. Folk music of the Tajik people is rich and diverse and describes people's lives and emotions, the customs and traditions, the Tadjik traits of characters. Work and harvest songs such as the “Mayda” harvest song, the potters “Az Kosagaron” or the “Ashulai Bofondagi”, the weavers song, are widely known. Specific melodies and lyrics for the many ceremonies throughout the lifespan sung either by men or women even in modern families and the epos on the popular hero “gurugli” from central Tajikistan, a guttural song is instantly recognized.
In the XX century many farmers went abroad to work as seasonal labors and through this experience a whole new genre was developed, the “garibi”, songs of longing for the motherland and the experience abroad.
GULGARDONI FESTIVAL.
In some places of Tajikistan this holiday is called "Boychechak" ("Snowdrop"). The ceremony of calling for spring consists of the following: groups of young men with huge bouquets of flowers - snowdrops, irises, tulips - pass the houses of the inhabitants of the rural village and sing carol type congratulatory songs accompanied by the doira (tambourine) and dutar (string instrument). One of the most widespread songs is connected to the first spring flower - the snowdrop. The day of celebration of this ceremony usually ends with bazm - a party with food, and performances by singers, musicians, dancers, masharabozes - national comedians and jokers.
TULIP FESTIVAL
In the first day of the tulip festival, the Sayri Guli Lola, a sail is arranged between branches of the biggest trees, which are tied with bunches of tulips. Everyone makes a wish. Choral and dancing songs are performed accompanied by musical instruments; torch processions help to bannish he dark forces of winter. A male chorus with a lead singer - sarnakshem, plays a leading part in the ceremony. Choral unison songs are performed. The main ceremonial song "Naqshi kalon" - "Big naqsh" (tune, anthem) is a slow and profound.
SOZANDA
On the occasion the major events in the life of a woman, the birth of a girl, her wedding, professional musicians are invited to entertain and bestow their good blessings the Sozanda. The Sozanda go back a long way in history and till this day their presence is indispensable at such festivities. The Sozanda performers who are mostly female form an ensemble, the “dasta”.
