Born in 1949 in a small town in Austria, Eduard Raush started out in the electronics industry after graduating from University and in the 80's made a career with the State Austrian Tobacco company. Today he is General Director of the Central Asian Operation of Reemtsma, one of the world's major tobacco companies, with its regional Headquarters in Bishkek from where the various Reemtsma brands are distributed and promoted.

Three years have passed since you took over the lead at Reemtsma Kyrgyzstan. Do you sometimes miss home?
I have been away from home for a substantial number of years, as a country director for Reemtsma's in such locations as Slovenia or Germany. My wife is here with me in Kyrzgyzstan, my children and immediate family all live in Austria where I spend time twice a year. Probably it is these visits that help me not to get homesick.

On a daily basis, you are accustomed to dealing with a variety of people, traditions, cultures and economic environments. What strikes you most here?
From the beginning I was positively surprised at the openness of the Kyrgyz people, the hospitality and the still preserved cultural particularities and traditions, some of which I treasure and some of which I think should be changed. But I am a guest here and would not impose my personal views. The economy reminds me of what Europe used to be like, in my childhood, just after the second world war, only regaining its consciousness. I much appreciate the rich natural flavor of fruits, vegetables, kumiss. In Europe, food tends to acquire a bland, artificial taste.

What is Reemtsma's key for success in the area?
It is possible to develop business in any country. The main thing is to pay taxes, contribute to the economy, provide its citizens with jobs, participate in social projects. These are vital elements when building a profitable business.

Charitable action as part of the success?
The company's policy does not stipulate it but we do support various organizations such as the Rotary Club, which I preside and the International Women's Club, chaired by my wife.

With a heavy schedule such as yours, how do you relax?
A considerable a mount of my free time is spent at the Hyatt Hotel, in the spa area, enjoying a massage, the Jacuzzi and swimming in their pool. In the evening I go out for dinner to Arlecchino, the Adriatico, the Siberian Crown, Tavern 12 Fireplaces, the Hyatt's own restaurant.

How about weekends in Bishkek?
Ala Archa is my favorite site. We get out there for a picknic and some hiking, I enjoy nature, the fresh air. It's marvelous that we have such an amazing site so close by the city. Also, every year I goto Issyk-Kul, a place I recommend everyone to visit. It is my dream to travel further afield, to visit Samarkand, Bukhara, Khiva in Uzbekistan, since I've heard and read a lot about these cities.

As a gourmet, what parts of Kyrzgyz cuisine do you favor?
A tasty Shashlik. I like manty, pilaf and a nice laghman. In general, a well-cooked dish is like a masterpiece that demands undivided attention.

A piece of advise for first time travelersto the area?
I wish everybody who arrives to Central Asia to live here with an open heart and soul. Only in this way can one absorb all the charm of this area and enjoy its miracles and uniqueness.
