Cultural Tips. The Tea Ceremony

The first gesure upon visiting someone's home.
Is to be offered tea the ultimate Central Asian hospitality lays in the tea ceremony

The components
1. Chai (tea leaves)
2. Chainik (tea pot)
3. Piala (cup)
4. Chainik posh (tea cozy)
5. Graceful hands

1. The tea pot is rinsed with boiled water.
2. Fill chainik with boiled water.
3. Freshly brewed tea is poured into nearest piala.
4. From the piala, the tea is poured back into the chainik.
5. 1x, 2x, 3x repeated 3x into the same piala.
6. The 4th x the tea is left in the piala, this piala is the one for the host.
7. Tea is poured into the first remaining piala and distributed.
8. Tea is poured into the second remaining piala and distributed.
9. And so forth till everybody is served.
10. The host then brings his piala to his lips, nips at his tea to prove his good intentions.
11. 1 table spoon green tea per chainik.
12. Lay out the pialas around the tea pot.

The Golden rules

  • Serve the most senior lady first then the most senior gentleman and so forth
  • Never pour a cup more than half full
  • Never touch the cup's rim while serving
  • When handing the piala to a guest bring it first to your heart chai is given from the heart
