One of the cafes in Tashkent that enjoy wide popularity among both natives and foreigners nowadays is cafe Afrosiab situated near the Intercontinental. It perfectly combines national styles and the high-level of service and quality you expect.
Honoring the arts and crafts of their ancestors was the motivational background for two entrepreneurial friends when they first talked about going into the restaurant business. By New Yeas opened its doors.
We called on here in the midday heat and were greeted by the gates according to the ancient traditions. Upon our request we were led to the main restaurant where we were seated under green roof of grapewines, next to the central fountain. Also available were private VIP-rooms where guests can listen to classical music performed by a professional pianist, or the traditional tapchan, where you dine as Uzbeks do, with crossed legs and appetizing food laid out on the traditional dastarkhan table, Nothing better to provide atmosphere.
The Cafe is set in an old house, which was built in typical Central Asian style from clay bricks, and the walls were covered with a clay and straw mix. This provides ideal insulation, containing the warmth in the winter and the cool in the summer.
According to tradition, your meal begins with a piala (cup) of aromatic tea Plates, pjalas and dishes are made from Rishtan ceramics by craftspeople. Small niches in the walls are curtained with Margilan fabrics and decorated with vine and red pepper.
The table lights at night are from old copper vessels, which were in olden times filled with lamp oil and used to provide the sole source of light. The ceiling is hung with cloth made in XIX century. All antiques used for decoration have been carefully collected over years. The tablecloth and all other fabrics utilized were custom made in Margilan to match the concept. They were part of the initial planning stages and contribute in mayor part to unique the ambiente and the atmosphere that Afrosiab is able to provide.
The menu is quite impressive, combining the best of Uzbek traditional cuisine with European elements such as salads.
Plov, the house specialty is made from precious Rishtan rice, Shashlik and Shurpa served in the pot ideally combine the European dishes. The delicious food is best accompanied by Uzbek wines, natural juices and cocktails.
