South of Shakhrisabz, in the Surkhandarya province, along the ancient trade route of The Great Silk Road, hidden away in a beautiful valley, lays Baisun an area on its way to becoming a household name among the culturally interested in Uzbekistan and Central Asia. Why? One, Baisun has been declared, by UNESCO, one of 19 Masterpieces of Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity in the world and two, each spring the Boysun Bahori Folklore Festival takes place amidst the spectacular landscape. For several days, professional and amateur folk ensembles, musicians playing traditional instruments, narrators of folktales, singers as well as crafts masters,
avanguard fashion designers, folklorists, ethnographers, art critics, historians and philologists together with international and national dignitaries and visitors from many countries gather to celebrate folk art and to indulge in cultural dialog. According to last year's participants, Baisun was a highlight in the cultural year and a fantastic human experience. Strong voices from all over Central Asia carry the sound of ancient folk songs over the meadows and the surrounding mountain tops to our hearts delight. Folk dance ensembles entertain you with their gracious movements and a jury elects the price winner among the best of the best from Uzbekistan and its neighboring countries.
Splendid display of the richness of Central Asian folk costumes as worn by locals from Baisun and festival participants.
Where tradition meets the most avanguard fashion design you are likely to see in a long time, Uzbekistan's best couturiers and designers showcase what they ore capable of and the richness of Central Asian textiles. You'll be blown away. |
