"It was upon the suggestion of the president of Uzbekistan, I. Karimov on an official visit to South Korea in 1995, that the creation of a golf club in the republic was initiated", says Mr. Suh Keun Yi, chairman of the Tashkent Golf Club. "At the time I was ambassador extraordinaire and plenipotentiary of South Korea in Uzbekistan and I was approached with the proposal to realize this project. From a choice of several potential areas for golf fields (even Chimgan was offered) we selected the one that corresponded to the ideal: close the city, amongst a hilly landscape and with the fakes creating a unique microclimate. Famous players were regularly invited for design consultations and we additionally based the layout on our own experience. Making use of the greenery available at the Rokhat nature reserve, Korean specialists then supplemented the plantation to achieve an ecological balance. In 1996 the Tashkent Hokimyat t (City Mayors Office) together with the OSI (Older Star Inc) company started the construction of Tashkent Golf Club.
The project was realized with financial support of foreign investors from all over the world. In September 1998 the Tashkent Lakeside Golf Club welcomed its first visitors, representatives of foreign companies, members of the government, embassy representatives and private individuals who all shared the passion for golf and have all become club members. Simultaneously with the opening of the Golf Club the Association of golfers was established, with the aim to popularize this leisure sport in Uzbekistan. In May 2000 the first open golf tournament was held, strongly supported by the government of Uzbekistan.
